Dora the Explorer Backpack Rescue Bag
I found the site clarifying the nature of the toxic material mentioned by other reviewers:
[...]
It does not violate toy safety law, but the chemical is toxic. This is a chemical present in countless consumer products.
I bought this bag for my 2-year-old son. Dora the Explorer is one of his favorite TV programs broadcasting in Taiwan. This bag is small but fit his little toys. I think it’s a good bag for little kids.
This Dora Backpack is a soft velvety cloth. Comfy to wear around constantly like our granddaughter did when she first got it. Not heavy or hard. Comes with Map! She love’s it!
This looks to be as good or better quality than any kid’s backpack that you’ll find at Target or Toys R Us. If your kid loves Dora, she’ll love this backpack. It has 2 side pockets, one with a durable folding Map (which is thankfully attached with a string, although it needs to be longer) and a large single compartment. It holds enough stuff for a 3-4 year old. If she could fill it any more I wouldn’t really want her running around with all that weight. The only disappointment is the Velcro latch which is rather small, hard get firmly closed.
Yes it has a warning from the State of California about some material causing cancer. You’ll be hard pressed to find anything that the State of California doesn’t say causes cancer. As long as your kid doesn’t eat several of these backpacks, I’m sure she’ll be fine.
My daughter LOVES her Dora backpack. It isn’t heavy, like most backpacks she would carry around on her back. She can put some books in it, her Boots stuffed animal, and other things. She brings it with her everywhere. We cut the string that was attached to the Map so she could use it easier.
I had to wash this backpack three times to get the toxic plastic smell out. I’m hypersensitive to exposing my child to harsh chemicals and so I would never had allowed her to play with it without washing it. I really makes me wonder what is causing the smell, but the laundering seemed to work… eventually. My toddler loves it and loves to stuff her dora accessories inside.
My daughter’s backpack arrived today. She loves watching Dora and instantly recognized the backpack from the TV show. The backpack is of good quality. It’s soft, the face is made of a shiny plastic/vinyl, and it has an attractive look. It comes with the Map, which has a cute face on the outside and the inside has a picture of Dora traveling through a maze to get home. It folds up and fits into one of the side pockets (the backpack has two), with a short purple rope attached to keep it from getting lost. The backpack is a perfect size for kids, and can fit several good-sized books inside. The velcro on the flap keeps the top closed well. The straps are adjustable and it looks like it will fit for the next few years (she’s 18 months now). Overall this was a great purchase and we are very happy with it.
